UF Health Sports physicians worked with the Florida High School Athletic Association and the Florida Alliance for Sports Medicine to discuss how to keep teenage athletes safe. A WCJB TV-20 news story highlights how a Southwest Florida parent is using her son's death as an example of why policy needs to change statewide.
Dr. Jason Zaremski, MD, CAQSM, FACSM, FAAPMR recently wrote an article that was published in the Washington Post. The article discusses how parents can protect their children from overuse injuries in sports. From the article:
"What happened this week in my clinic is not unlike most weeks: A young boy and his mother walked in because his elbow hurt after throwing a baseball. I had a strong feeling what was going on with this 9-year-old patient.
UF Health sports medicine physicians, along with the Florida Alliance for Sports Medicine, will help host regionally selected guests to discuss high school sports safety in Florida. The two-day meeting will conclude with safety policy recommendations that will be submitted to the Florida High School Athletic Association and The Sunshine State Athletic Conference to be immediately adopted statewide.

Drs. Prine, Smith, and Zaremski as well as Toby Harkins, ATC recently presented at the Emerald Coast of Florida on Youth Safety in Sports Medicine. Topics included Sports Related Concussions, Sudden Cardiac Death in Athletes, Exertional Heat Illness, and Emergency Action Plans. Over 25 coaches from High Schools and Youth Sports Associations from the greater Destin/Niceville/Ft. Walton/Okaloosa region attended.
Dr. Kevin Farmer, MD, will be a representative for the state of Florida at the Collaborative Solutions for Safety in Sports Medicine conference at the NCAA Headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. This year's conference will be held during March 22 - 23, 2016.
Each states will have two (2) representatives at the conference to discuss the safety of student athletes throughout the country.
For the third straight year, Dr. Kevin Farmer, MD, will be assisting with the medical evaluations for prospective NFL players for the Miami Dolphins at the 2016 NFL Combine.
This year's NFL Combine will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana during February 23-29, 2016.

Dr Kevin Farmer, MD presented research at the 2014 meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons that a limited range of motion in a baseball pitcher’s hips could be a risk factor in the injury known as pitcher’s elbow. "This could open up a whole new line of thought processes and research," Farmer said. "We’re going to be able to ask: Is there an associated risk of injury down the road with limited hip range of motion, and can we minimize that risk by improving hip range of motion?"
