Message from the Program Director
Andre Spiguel, MD
The UF program is deeply rooted in the legacy of Dr. William F. Enneking, one of the founding fathers of musculoskeletal oncology. His groundbreaking work, including the development of the Enneking Staging System for Musculoskeletal Neoplasms, continues to influence the practice of orthopaedic oncology worldwide.

The University of Florida Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship provides a comprehensive and immersive clinical experience that emphasizes independent, thoughtful, and proactive learning in both outpatient and surgical settings. Fellows are expected to approach each patient with critical thinking and initiative, actively engage in diagnostic and operative planning with attending faculty, and integrate clinical experiences into their academic and teaching efforts. Fellows also actively participate in preoperative conferences held every Monday and Wednesday after clinic, where all core faculty are present to discuss upcoming cases, refine surgical plans, and review complex diagnostic and management considerations.

Fellows gain extensive hands-on experience in the operating room at least two days a week, each operating under the guidance of faculty mentor. They perform a wide range of complex surgical procedures, including tumor resections, reconstructions, limb salvage and ablative surgeries. The fellows perform approximately 400 cases each year. The program is designed to maximize surgical exposure and technical skill development, ensuring that fellows graduate with the confidence and expertise required for independent orthopaedic oncology practice.

The musculoskeletal oncology education curriculum has been refined to enhance structure and interactivity. Weekly didactics, case discussions and pathology slide reviews are scheduled every Friday morning after multi-disciplinary tumor board and organized in 8 education blocks covering all aspects of musculoskeletal oncology including surgery, radiology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and pathology perspectives.

  1. Fellows are expected to review materials in advance, prepare for discussion-based sessions, and demonstrate enthusiasm, engagement, and intellectual curiosity throughout each educational block.
  2. Fellows also lead Journal Club sessions during each educational block, selecting high-impact, relevant articles under faculty guidance and facilitating discussion to strengthen evidence-based learning.
  3. Fellows actively contribute to the Clinical Case Library, documenting at least four key operative or consult cases each month. Each case is annotated with key learning points to support longitudinal education and serve as a valuable resource for future fellows and residents.

Resident mentorship is an integral component of the fellowship. Fellows are expected to take an active teaching role—guiding residents through didactic content, participating in Friday morning lectures, and fostering a collaborative, supportive learning environment that promotes professional growth and clinical excellence.

At the University of Florida, fellows also participate in a biannual weeklong Musculoskeletal Pathology Course, during which they are released from clinical duties to fully engage in the educational sessions. In addition, fellows are sponsored to attend the STRYKER Course in New Jersey, as well as major professional meetings such as ISOLS, MSTS, CTOS, and AAOS, with travel support provided by the program.
