Pediatric Orthopaedics Fellowship Clinical Schedule

The fellow will have a lot of flexibility in designing his/her experience. There are four full-time pediatric fellowship trained board certified surgeons with block time at Shands Children’s Hospital.

We have additional block time at the Children’s Surgical Center. We do the full spectrum of pediatric orthopedics including a busy practice in Ponseti clubfoot, DDH, spastic hip, SCFE and other developmental and acquired conditions of the lower extremities. We are busy with non-operative and operative spine care with three of four surgeons having scoliosis practices. We do waterproof Mehta casting, non-fusion techniques including Api Fix and anterior vertebral body tethering, growth friendly techniques including Shilla, Magnetically Controlled Growth Rods and Traditional growth rods. We perform both free hand and enabling technology assisted spine surgery.

The fellow will spend 2-3 days in the operating room and 1-2 days in the clinic with protected research time. We have clinics on the fourth floor of the Orthopedic and Sport Medicine Institute (OSMI) and at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala. The fellow will have increasing independence with fellow-run clinics alongside faculty.

There is a gait lab where the fellow will be able to learn about gait analysis alongside our Director Dr Kirsten Norrell. This is a multidisciplinary clinic with PM&R, AT’s, PT’s and an engineer.

Collaborative care is done for neuromuscular diseases, endocrinopathies, skeletal dysplasia and musculoskeletal infections.

Call will be one weeknight during the week and one weekend a month which can be split up. This will provide on call experience at an ACS Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center.

Additional clinical time will be on the pediatric upper extremity service with Dr. Jongmin Kim and Dr. El Gammal who treat congenital and acquired pediatric hand conditions including brachial plexus deficiencies. The Fellow will rotate on both operative and nonoperative sports services and can arrange some middle school and high school sideline time with trainers if desired.
