About Tarek El-Gammal

My journey in the field of medicine started back in 1984 when I graduated from Assiut University, Faculty of Medicine, Egypt. Thereafter, I've pursued further education and training, earning a master’s degree in Orthopedics in 1988, followed by a PhD in 1993. For over two decades now, I've held the position of Professor of Orthopedics with involvement in administration since 2010.

Along this academic path, I've pursued fellowships in hand surgery, Ilizarov techniques, and reconstructive microsurgery, in the USA, Russia, and Taiwan. Subsequently, I had the privilege to establish The Reconstructive Microsurgery Center at Assiut University Hospitals in 2001, which quickly became a leading center in the Middle East, offering crucial services to a wide population and drawing patients from neighboring countries. This center has also been a hub for training numerous national and international fellows.

With a focus on sharing my expertise, I've mentored and supervised over 60 master’s and PhD theses and co-founded The International Brachial Plexus School, providing hands on training in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of brachial plexus injuries via international platforms in Spain, India, Egypt, and Mexico. My endeavors in the field was nationally recognized when I was elected as the inaugural president of the Egyptian Society of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery in 2009. Internationally, I have served as a visiting professor to several esteemed institutions, society meetings and workshops worldwide and as a reviewer for several hand and microsurgery journals.

Outside of work, I cherish spending quality time with my family and listening to country music, gardening, and horse breeding and riding.

I also focus on the treatment and surgical intervention for acute complex hand fractures, dislocations, and their subsequent complications. Additionally, I specialize in microsurgical reconstruction to address complex bone and soft tissue loss.
