This week we celebrated National Doctors Day here at UF Orthopaedics! In recognition of the outstanding care they provide daily, many of our physicians received cards from grateful patients who made gifts to UF Health in their honor!

In an announcement from the University of Florida Advancement, more than 65 friends, family members and colleagues have collectively given the University of Florida $1.5 million to endow an orthopaedics professorship in Dr. Bill Petty’s name to commemorate his contributions as one of the all-time greats in his field of total joint arthroplasty.  From the article:

The 2020-2021 U.S. News & World Report's best hospitals survey has ranked UF Health Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Institute #45 among the nation's Top 50 providers for orthopaedic care.  This year's report also ranked the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital as Florida's top health center and one of the nation’s elite.  An additional eight other medical specialties placed in the nation’s Top 50 — more than any other hospital in the Sunshine State.

The Adult Arthroplasty Service at UF Health Orthopaedics has achieved the highest possible quality category for its care of Medicare patients undergoing hip and knee replacement surgery.  This distinction is achieved by a small number of the >800 hospitals nationally participating in Medicare’s Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) program who demonstrate sustained excellence, over years, in patient care and outcomes throughout these major surgeries.

February is American Heart Month and Feb. 7 National Wear Red Day.  National Wear Red Day warns women of their Number 1 health threat — heart disease.  The color red is known for signifying strength, power and love. What better color to represent the strong women in our life affected by heart disease?  If you ask around, you’ll probably find someone in your home, office, clinical unit or team who has been affected by heart disease.

UF Health and Shriners Hospitals for Children have forged a unique relationship that will have a meaningful impact for children with musculoskeletal problems.  The two institutions announced in October 2019 that Shriners Hospitals for Children will create the Shriners professorship in pediatric orthopaedics, the Shriners fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics and funding for improvements at the pediatric orthopaedic practice to help enhance the patient experience
