Thank you for your interest in our Orthopaedic Oncology educational programs at the University of Florida. All applicants must apply via the SF Match Program.  The Orthopaedic Oncology program at the UF OSMI offers two educational opportunities: a Clinical Fellowship and an Observational Fellowship. They are described in detail below:

Clinical Fellowship

The University Of Florida Department Of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Orthopaedic Oncology is fully accredited by the ACGME for two fellowship positions in Orthopaedic Oncology. The fellowship is one year in length, typically from August through July the following year. Each fellow participates in the clinical, operative and educational activities of the Orthopaedic Oncology Division. This includes a semiannual Musculoskeletal Pathology Seminar. The goal is to educate the fellow to function as a fully trained Orthopaedic Oncologist. Most of the graduates enter academic medicine. There is a requirement to complete a publishable clinical and/or basic science research project during the fellowship. Historically fellows have completed from 1-4 projects. Applicants must have completed an Orthopaedic surgical residency program. The stipend for USA trained applicants is at the PGY6 level. All applicants must complete the full application; provide the required letters of recommendation and documents to be considered for interview. The applications are typically reviewed and interviews are completed between 18-24 months prior to the start of the fellowship.

Foreign applicants must have completed an Orthopaedic surgical residency and be fully accredited by the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates). To be certified by ECFMG you must pass a series of exams. You must also fulfill ECFMG’s medical education credential requirements. These requirements include providing ECFMG with copies of your medical diploma and, effective February 1, 2004, your final medical school transcript, which ECFMG will verify directly with your medical school. Non-USA trained applicants are eligible for compensation only at the PGY-1 level, unless they have completed training in the USA for 1 year (then a PGY2), etc.

Observational Fellowship

The Orthopaedic Oncology division welcomes international and American visitors for informal observational fellowships. This experience is of variable length. Some have come for a few days and others have stayed for over a year. Some of the observational fellows have completed significant research projects. The observational fellowship experience is negotiable on an individual basis. Since no funding is provided we suggest seeking funding from outside resources. The VISA requirements for foreign visitors must be met. We recommend at least a funding level of $25,000 US dollars for a one year stay for a single person. Potential funding sources include the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society Hatcher Pathology Fellowship, industry sponsors and home departments. No housing is provided.
