  • Modern footwear has been implicated as a contributor to foot pathology and changes in the biomechanics of gait. In addition to footwear, the investigators propose that the lack of terrain variation may directly contribute to the development of common foot pathologies, resulting from decreased intrinsic foot muscle function. This study will examine the current understanding of terrain variation on foot musculature strength and its possible correlation with structural and functional changes within the foot.

  • R. James Toussaint, MD, associate professor and chief of the foot and ankle division at UF Orthopaedics, is using 3D printing technology in total talus and ankle replacement surgery. The 3D printed talus is composed of cobalt and chrome alloy customized to the patient specific anatomy. This allows for a faster recovery and excellent range of motion after surgery.

I earned my medical degree from the University of South Florida with a scholarly concentration in biomedical research.

  • My name is Antony Merendino, DPM, and I am a clinical assistant professor at the University of Florida Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. I earned my medical degree from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in Miami. Following medical school, I completed my residency in podiatric surgery at Kern Hospital for Special Surgery in Warren, Michigan.

As a surgeon, I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic injuries, with a particular interest in degenerative, traumatic and sports-related foot and ankle disorders.
