Two distinguished physicians from the University of Florida, Dr. Hernan Prieto and Dr. Alaina Ritter, recently represented UF at the 2025 International Consensus Meeting on Orthopedic Infections (ICM) in Istanbul Türkiye. The ICM is a globally recognized forum for advancing the science and treatment of musculoskeletal infections.
Held by the International Consensus Group on Orthopedic Infections, the ICM brings together leading experts from around the world to develop and update evidence-based guidelines using the Delphi approach and foster collaboration in the fight against complex orthopedic infections. This year’s meeting focused on emerging technologies, antimicrobial strategies, and surgical innovations aimed at improving patient outcomes.
Dr. Hernan Prieto, an associate professor and Division Chief of Adult Arthroplasty and Joint Reconstruction at UF Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, is known for his expertise in complex hip and knee reconstructions and his leadership in musculoskeletal infection research. His continued participation in the ICM underscores his commitment to advancing surgical care and infection prevention strategies. Dr. Prieto’s clinical and research work has helped elevate UF’s arthroplasty program to international prominence.
Dr. Alaina Ritter, a specialist in infectious diseases and Chief Hospital Epidemiologist at the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System, also attended the conference. She holds a joint appointment at the UF College of Medicine and serves as the VA Site Director for the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program. Dr. Ritter’s focus on bone and joint infections brings a critical perspective to the multidisciplinary approach championed at the ICM.
