There aren't many people who can say they've been a varsity athlete since the sixth grade, but for Bell Bulldog senior softball player Alaina Thomas, that opportunity has allowed her to be part of a team she considers family. Her teammates recognize her value both inside the circle and at the plate, as she leads the Bulldogs in ERA, runs, doubles, and triples. Her efforts have earned her this week's UF Health Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week award.

"I've been with this main senior group of girls for a really long time, and it's super nice to see how much we get along," said Thomas. "We don't undermine each other, which lessens conflict and drama. We really connect well with each other, and it's so much fun to be around all my teammates."

Thomas has spent her entire life in the Bell area and is part of a five-generation family in the watermelon business. After high school, she plans to attend the University of Florida, majoring in food resource economics. She intends to pursue a master's degree in Agro-Business Management to help with the family business after her time as a Gator is finished.

For now, she's enjoying her time as a two-sport athlete, also playing volleyball. An all-area libero, Thomas credits her experience in volleyball with enhancing her performance on the softball field.

"Playing multiple sports keeps me active," she said. "It uses different muscles, but I'm constantly moving, tracking the ball, and I think the footwork has helped me become a better pitcher and fielder."

Thomas' best game this season came in a 67-pitch complete game against Dixie County, where she struck out 11 and didn't allow a walk. Opponents have struggled to hit her curveball and changeup, and Thomas enjoys the control she has on the mound.

"It's such a thrill to be in the circle," Thomas said. "I love being able to control the pace of the game and feel at peace. I can chill if needed or speed things up to keep the opponent off balance."

Looking back on her time as a Bulldog, Thomas cherishes the memories and remains focused on giving her best to a place she's been since kindergarten.

"The memories have been amazing, and I've tried to cherish each and every one of them," she said. "I don't want to take anything for granted and have always tried to leave everything on the field. No regrets."

Each weekly winner of the Athlete of the Week award is eligible for a $2,500 scholarship, with the UF Health High School Athlete of the Year to be named at the end of the 2024-25 academic year.
