Being a four-year starter at the high school level isn't easy, and accomplishing that for one of the best teams in the state is a rarity. But for Buchholz senior wrestler Finn Buchanan, it's all about mentality — buying into the program and continuing its legacy of success.
"It's been an honor to be a part of this program for the last four years," Buchanan said. "I was accepted in quickly and have built so many friendships with these guys. I've definitely gotten back what I've put in, and it's been incredible."
Buchanan went 2-0 in regionals this past weekend and now has a 39-6 record on the year. His 15 wins and 20 technical falls have contributed to a top-4 state ranking. His coach, Billy Pankey, recognizes Buchanan's exceptional work ethic and natural ability.
"Finn is an extension of us as a culture — as he goes, we go," said Pankey, who is in his 19th year as head coach. "He's got a lot of natural ability, but he's successful because of his grit and all the hard work he puts in daily."
After narrowly missing a state appearance as a freshman, Buchanan qualified for state as a sophomore and junior. As a senior, his goal is to bring home a state championship. The Knockout Christmas Classic over the break showed him he can compete with anyone.
"I went 1-2 last year at the classic, but was able to win five times this year. It was such an awesome experience," Buchanan said.
While working toward his individual goals, Buchanan also understands the importance of leadership. He cherishes the opportunity to pass on the lessons he learned from older teammates to the younger wrestlers.
"It's such a complicated process, trying to make weight and adapt to all the challenges wrestling brings," Buchanan said. "But I learned so many life lessons that are going to help me moving forward. I want the younger guys to learn that standard that Coach Pankey has given this program."
The Bobcats are ranked in the top 20 in the state and are consistently competing for individual championships. With Buchanan's leadership, the team remains a contender.
Buchanan was named the UF Health Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week. Each weekly winner is eligible for a $2,500 scholarship, with the UF Health High School Athlete of the Year to be named at the end of the 2024-25 academic year.
