The Columbia girl's varsity basketball team has faced a string of early-season injuries, leading to struggles and a four-game losing streak. However, the Tigers have turned things around, winning three straight road games, thanks in part to a standout performance from junior guard Mariah Cox. Cox put up 17 points and 10 steals in the Tigers' victory over PK Yonge, earning her the UF Health Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week honor.

"Having the team go through all the injuries has been tough, and we haven't had the ability to sub too often in games," Cox said. "But we've worked really hard, some girls have stepped up, and I think the early struggles will only help us when everyone gets back."

Cox, who moved to Florida in middle school, has played alongside her teammates for several years, including AAU ball. With a senior-heavy starting lineup, the Tigers have developed strong chemistry, which Cox credits to their bond.

"We all knew going into the year that we had a chance to be pretty special," Cox said. "We all had that hope that we could make a run, and it's exciting to be out there with my teammates."

Despite often facing double or triple teams, Cox has continued to deliver impressive performances this season. She enjoys overcoming the pressure and frustrates opposing teams with her ability to score.

"Sometimes all you can do is laugh. It's fun to see the other teams get frustrated when we are able to get by the pressure and put up points," Cox said. "It's all about trying to push through, and that is only gonna make us better as the season goes on."

Columbia has one more game before the holiday break, and after a few weeks off, they will face tough competition, including GHS, Rickards, and Buchholz. Cox is looking forward to the challenge and was thrilled to receive the Athlete of the Week honor.

"I love being out on the floor. I love getting out and doing something, and it's just fun to play the game," Cox said. "To be chosen amongst all of the great players around here was such an awesome feeling, and it's the first time I've been picked for anything like this."

Each weekly winner is eligible for a $2,500 scholarship, with the UF Health High School Athlete of the Year to be named at the conclusion of the 2024-25 academic year.
