Growing up in Venezuela, soccer — or as it's known in the United States, "futbol" — was always part of Erick Rodriguez's life. While baseball is the more popular sport in the South American country, soccer has quickly gained mainstream popularity, and for Rodriguez, it has become his passion.
The senior at St. Francis Catholic Academy in Gainesville has spent his high school years making a name for himself on the soccer field, earning recognition as this week's UF Health and Orthopaedics Athlete of the Week.
"I started playing soccer as soon as I could walk," said Rodriguez. "When I moved to the U.S., soccer was something I could see myself doing for a long time, and my work ethic has really helped me grow as a player."
As team captain, Rodriguez embraced his leadership role, working to keep his teammates motivated and ensuring that the younger players developed the skills he learned over the years. His dedication and respect for his peers have earned him the admiration of his coaches and athletic trainer, who applaud his contributions both on and off the field.
"It's been incredible here at St. Francis," Rodriguez said. "I've made so many friends, and we've developed great chemistry. I never imagined my senior year would go by so fast."
Rodriguez, who also plays club soccer at GSA, hopes to continue his athletic career in college after his high school days come to a close. One of his most memorable moments came during his sophomore year when he scored five goals in a game — a feat he says he'll never forget.
"I was really excited to hear I won Athlete of the Week," he said. "I'm proud to be recognized, and I just want to be the best teammate I can be. There are a lot of people who have helped me along the way."
As part of the recognition, Rodriguez is now eligible to win a $2,500 scholarship at the end of the academic year as the UF Health High School Athlete of the Year.
