Right from the start, the Chiefland Indians football team set the tone for what could be a special season under head coach Adam Gore. A victory over Williston showed they could compete with anyone, while knocking off previously undefeated Union County proved the Indians were ready to make a postseason push.

At the heart of their success has been senior Osten Jones, who has played a pivotal role in Chiefland's 9-1 regular season record. Jones, who plays nearly every snap — including kickoff duties — has been named this week's UF Health Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week.

"It's exciting to be recognized, especially being out here in this small town," Jones said. "We've got a ton of guys who work really hard, and I'm just happy to help influence all the people around me."

Jones has been a key figure on the field since his early days in pee-wee football out in Chiefland, where he and his teammates began building chemistry and winning little league championships. That bond continues to shine on the field to this day, including a memorable victory over Union County during Homecoming and Senior Night.

"It's one of the best games I've ever been a part of," Jones said. "We started the season and ended it with a bang. We just try to show up every day ready to play. It's a hungry group of guys, and we do what we preach each day — come together, buy in, and try to win."

A dual-threat for the Indians, Jones plays running back on offense and safety on defense. His contributions were on full display last week, when he posted 69 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, as well as a pick-six and a return touchdown that was called back.  It was just another typical Friday night for the senior.

"I get tired, I'm not gonna lie," Jones said. "But I just keep going because I want to help my teammates and coaches win. That's what we're all about here in Chiefland, and I can't wait to get the playoffs going."

Chiefland will begin its playoff run on Nov. 15 with a home game in the FHSAA first-round playoffs.

Each weekly winner of the UF Health Athlete of the Week award is eligible to win a $2,500 scholarship, with the recipient of the UF Health High School Athlete of the Year award to be named at the conclusion of the 2024-25 academic year.
