When your hometown has a population of fewer than 1,000 people, you're bound to interact with most of them at some point.
Small, close-knit communities are a hallmark of north central Florida, and for many residents, it's something they deeply cherish. For senior linebacker Cole Rarey, it's one of the reasons he loves his hometown — and why he believes the Bell Bulldogs are making their run to the state playoffs.
"I grew up with most of my teammates; we've been together since we were little. This is the best year we've had," Rarey said. "Everyone came together as a team, and we're just out there having fun trying to win football games."
It hasn’t been much fun for opposing offenses, though. Rarey and his teammates have stymied opponents, winning four of their last five games — including two shutouts. The senior linebacker has been a standout, averaging 8.5 tackles per game. In their most recent game, Rarey recorded nine tackles as Bell held Bishop Snyder to just nine points. His efforts earned him the UF Health Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week.
"It was really exciting to hear that I got the award. There are so many great players in the area, and I was happy to see the Bulldogs get represented," Rarey said. "We are a defensive group that plays hard, and for me to stand out among the crew and be noticed is cool."
Rarey's impressive stats have drawn attention across the state. He currently ranks seventh in tackles among players in the Sunshine State Athletic Association. Looking ahead to continuing his football career at the collegiate level, Rarey is determined to finish his high school career with a strong playoff run.
The Bulldogs will face Bronson this Friday night, a team they defeated 51-0 earlier in the season.
Congratulations to Cole Rarey, and good luck to him and the Bell Bulldogs as they begin the postseason.
