The OSMI welcomes Gregory Schultz, PhD, professor and director of research at UF Health OB-GYN.  Dr. Schultz will be presenting a talk to faculty and residents entitled, "Biofilms in Orthopaedic Infections."

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the unique properties of biofilm communities that provide high levels of tolerance to antibiotics and antiseptics that normally kill planktonic bacteria
  • Recognize the limitations of standard clinical microbiology assays to detect biofilms in patient samples
  • Assess the usefulness of new DNA-based identification of bacteria and fungi in wound samples
  • Describe different techniques for treatment of biofilms in soft tissue and on hardware implants
