Residency Application Information

Policy for Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) and Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) students applying to the University of Florida Orthopaedic Residency program:

  1. Applications will be accepted from qualified M.D. or D.O. students who graduate from fully accredited medical or osteopathic schools in the United States or Canada.

  2. All applicants, M.D. and D.O., must submit their applications using the ERAS system. The materials which should be submitted (e.g. letters of recommendation, personal statement, dean's letter, etc) are the same for all applicants.

  3. Passing scores on the M.D. or D.O. licensing examinations are required. As these are multi part examinations students should have completed all of the parts of these examinations appropriate and expected for their level of education.

    It is expected that all University of Florida orthopaedic residents will complete all parts of the licensing examination (at the appropriate times) and be eligible to obtain an unrestricted state of Florida medical license.

    For D.O. applicants, either the COMLEX USA or NBME is acceptable. Taking both exams is not required.

  4. University of Florida College of Medicine policies regarding applicants who are NOT citizens of the United States apply to all applicants. These policies are subject to changes in response to immigration laws.

These instructions are for the PGY 1 resident positions beginning July 1, 2011.

The Orthopaedic Surgery residency program consists of five years of education and training in orthopaedic surgery. Our program accepts four (4) residents per year.

This is a categorical residency program which begins with the PGY 1 year. A separate application for a PGY 1 position is not required. All applications must be sent via the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Information on this application system is available through the Dean’s office at each applicant’s medical school.

The ERAS application should include:

  1. Completed universal residency application form

  2. Photograph (2 X 2 size)

  3. One page personal statement.

  4. The official Dean's Office letter from your medical school endorsing your application.

  5. Medical school transcript

  6. Three letters of reference. At least one letter should be from an orthopaedic surgeon associated with your medical school and familiar with your work. The letters of reference should be addressed to “Residency Program Director”.

The deadline for our receipt of your completed application material is October 15, 2010.

We will notify you regarding the status of your application and whether we will be able to offer you an interview. This process usually takes about 6 weeks. Several interview dates are be available and interviews will be held in November 2010, December 2010, January, 2011, and February 2011.
