Barefoot Running
UF IRB #497-2010
BAREFOOT RUNNING STUDY
This study will be comparing how many calories are used and how much force is produced when the feet make contact with the ground. Two testing sessions will be performed: 1) with shoes on, and 2) barefoot. We will be testing trained runners who have a mid-forefoot run pattern (where the middle foot or ball of the foot touches the ground first compared to the heels landing first).
What is involved?
Two testing sessions at the Human Dynamics Laboratories UF Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Institute (floor 1).
In visit one, participants will run a few times over a mat that shows the running pattern, will run over force plates in the lab floor (a section of flooring with force sensors in it) and will run on a treadmill for 20 minutes with shoes or barefoot. During the treadmill test, participants will wear a device that measures the calories burned during the session. (about 1 ½ hours)
In visit two, participants will repeat the 20 minute treadmill exercise session, with or without shoes, depending of what was performed during the first session. (about 45 minutes)
Who is eligible?
- Men and women 18-45 years old
- A verified running foot striking style of mid-forefoot strike
- Run on average at least 20 miles/week
- Able to run for at least 20 minutes at one session
- Free of any orthopedic limitation (e.g. acute injury to the lower limb, hip or back)
- Must have, and run in, cushioned running shoes at least once per week.
