Management of Knee Pain
Osteoarthtritis (OA) and degenerative joint disease (DJD) are common causes of knee pain. Many patients are not aware that there are several ways to help reduce the pain and disability associated with DJD and OA. The physicians in the PM&R clinic specialize in the comprehensive evaluation and non-surgical management of pain associated with DJD and OA. These treatments are designed to maximize function and minimize the disability that comes with knee and hip pain. The treatments include physical therapy, oral medications, braces, corticosteroid injections and joint fluid therapy.
Joint fluid therapy, or viscosupplementation, is a form of treatment that provides lubrication and cushioning inside the knee joint to decrease pain and increase function. These treatments have been shown to decrease the pain and disability from OA. Joint fluid therapy helps to restore the shock absorbing ability of the knee so that the patient can move more freely and participate in activities that they have been avoiding due to pain.
