The Spine Division is pleased to announce that Dr. Robert Decker is slated to join the OSMI in the fall of 2009. Dr. Decker trained at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta for his Orthopaedic residency, and is completing additional specialized training in surgical spine at The University of California. Spine services at the OSMI will be among the most comprehensive and unique in the region offering therapeutic, interventional and surgical offerings for the entire patient spectrum - pediatrics to adult. |

The OSMI Sports Medicine division was well represented at the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) 18th Annual Meeting help in Tampa, Florida during April 25-29, 2009. Dr. Padilla, a primary care Sports Medicine Fellow presented a scientific poster and then was an integral member of the winning fellow quiz bowl team. This year’s South team beat the North 10-2 in the final round. Former OSMI Fellows Dr. Heath Hale and Dr. Bryan Prine (Lake City Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine Center) also attended this year’s AMSSM Meeting. The Annual Health Science Center Service Pin Awards recognize employees serving from 5 years to 35 years of continuous service to UF. The 2008-2009 Service Pin Award Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. in the HPNP Auditorium. Dr. DJ Kennedy, MD, is slated to join OSMI this upcoming summer as a new Assistant Professor in the Physical Medicine Division. Dr. Kennedy completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Washington Rehabilitation Program. At present, Dr. Kennedy is completing specialized fellowship training in the latest techniques in internventional spine at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. |

The 9th Annual Hands to Love Congenital Hand Camp took place this past weekend, running from Friday March 27, 2009 through Sunday, March 29, 2009. The camp has focused on helping patients adjust to a congenital condition occurring in one of every 5,000 births in which a person is born with abnormalities of the hands, arms or fingers. The Independent Florida Alligator has a feature article on this year’s camp: "Camp helps children gain self–confidence through activities." CNN.Com also has a feature article on this year’s camp: "Hand Camp gives kids a chance to play -- away from stares." The OSMI Trauma Division recently announced its receipt of a $100,000 educational corporate gift in support of post-doctoral training in psychology and its impact on trauma care. The gift will support the hiring of an annual post-doctoral fellowship in psychology, with a focus on trauma care. |

Deenesh T. Sahajpal, MD is performing a computer assisted reverse total shoulder on March 18th, 2009. This unique surgical technique is believed to be one of the first performed in the southeast United States utilizing technology with such a technically complex surgical procedure. Heather K. Vincent, PhD, has been named a "United States Bone and Joint Decade (USBJD)" scholar as a member of the "Young Investigators Initiative and Workshop Program". She will also attend the Bone and Joint Decade Global Network Conference to be held in Washington D.C. October 21-24, 2009. The USBJD Research Committee offers a program consisting of workshops and mentoring to provide early-career clinical investigators an opportunity to work with experienced researchers in our field to assist them in securing funding and other survival skills required for pursuing an academic career. This program of workshops and mentoring is open to promising junior faculty or senior fellows or post-doctoral researchers that have been nominated by their department or division chairs. It is also open to senior fellows or residents that are doing research and have a faculty appointment in place or confirmed. The workshops take place in the Spring and in the Fall. The unique aspect of this program is the opportunity for attendees to maintain a relationship with a mentor until their application is funded. |

A recent Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) report from a national survey found that 83% of University of Florida medical school graduates ranked the clerkships in Rehabilitation and Geriatric Care provided satisfactory training and appropriate dedicated time in the education of rehabilitation medicine and geriatric medicine. The AAMC national average was 63% for all medical schools. Dr. James Atchison, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Division Chair, noted that "this recognition by the students we educate, is a positive affirmation of our programs committment to excellence in education." The physical medicine and rehabilitation division provides a wide array of musculoskeletal services at OSMI as well as the Shands Rehabilitation Hospital. |
