The Journal of Gene Therapy

Dr. Steven Ghivizzani

Steven C. Ghivizzani, PhD, has accepted a position for a two-year term on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Gene Therapy.

The Journal of Gene Therapy covers both the research and clinical applications of the new genetic therapy techniques currently being developed. The application of molecular biology has revolutionised our understanding of many diseases and has been readily applied for diagnostic purposes. Over the last decade, gene therapy protocols have entered clinical trials in increasing numbers. Covering a wide spectrum of diseases, these studies promise to unite the diverse organ based specialities into which modern medicine has become divided. Gene Therapy covers all aspects of gene therapy as applied to human disease, including preclinical animal experiments, novel platform technologies for gene transfer, and gene expression analysis.

Dr. Terese Chmielewski

Terese Chmielewski Ph.D. P.T., an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and guest collaborator at OSMI, recently received the James A. Gould Excellence in Teaching Award. This national award recognizes excellence in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy principles and techniques. Chmielewski was honored at the American Physical Therapy Association’s Combined Sections Annual Conference meeting in Nashville, Tennessee.

Santa Fe Saints Fast Pitch Softball

For the Santa Fe Saints Fastpitch team, 2008 will be a year to remember. The team became the first in school history to win 50 games, going 51-3-1 and also set a record for most consecutive wins, winning 32 in a row from February 29 to April 10. The team is currently ranked number one in the state of Florida, and number one in the national poll as well. The Saints have been ranked number one in the state for the entire spring and number one in the nation for every week with the exception of the first week’s poll.

The Saints outscored their opponents 328-70 this season, averaging nearly six runs per game, while giving up just over one run per game.

On the year, the Saints hit .341, tied for second in the state, and racked up 502 hits, leading the state. They also hit 36 homeruns as a team.

The Saints will take to the field again on May 2 at 12:00pm for the first day of the FCCAA/NJCAA Region VIII Tournament in Auburndale, FL, when they will play conference rival Lake City College in the first round of the double elimination tournament.

Dr. MaryBeth Horodyski inducted into the SEATA Hall of Fame

Dr. MaryBeth Horodyski, EdD, ATC, Associate Professor and Director of Research, was honored by the Southeast Athletic Trainers’ Association (SEATA) and inducted to the SEATA Hall of Fame on March 1, 2008.

The SEATA Hall of Fame is designed to recognize and honor those members of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association District IX (a seven-state region) who performed extraordinary service and brought honor to the profession of athletic training.

Dr. Horodyski is currently the President of the District IX National Athletic Trainers’ Association District and gave a lecture entitled “Family, Athletic Training and the Great Juggling Act” at the SEATA meeting.

Dr. MaryBeth Horodyski

Dr. MaryBeth Horodyski, EdD, ATC, Associate Professor and Director of Research, presented research data to the National Football League Physicians Society on February 22, 2008.

Dr. Horodyski presented research findings on the effects of cooling devices placed in shoulder pads. Her research was supported by a grant from the NFL Charities and included investigators Nikolaus Gravenstein, MD, and Samsun Lampotang, PhD, from the UF Department of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Deenesh T. Sahajpal, in collaboration with Dr. Joseph Zuckerman, have a publication in an upcoming issue of the Journal of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

This publication is entitled, “Chronic Glenohumeral Dislocations”. The JAAOS has a readership of over 40,000 worldwide.

Moffitt Cancer Center, Shands HealthCare and the University of Florida announced today that they will work together to develop world-class programs in cancer care, research and prevention.

The Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation have secured a $200,000 grant for a research study with Progenics, Inc. The study focuses on the effect of a new drug therapy that may reduce the opiod-induced gastrointestinal issues commonly associated with orthopaedic procedures.

Les Jebson, OSMI Administrator, has been asked to lecture at the upcoming University Health Consortium Performance Excellence Forum in February in Texas. He will be focusing on device reprocessing and the ethical, financial and legal implications surrounding this growing industry movement.

The University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) is an alliance of 97 academic medical centers and 153 of their affiliated hospitals representing approximately 90% of the nation’s non-profit academic medical centers. UHC offers its members specific programs and services to improve clinical, operational and patient safety performance.

The Research Division is pleased to welcome Hannes Cleppe, a new research fellow for 2007-2008. Hannes is coming from Nieuwpoort, Belgium and will be working with us and Dr. Scott Banks, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Hannes received his physical therapy degree from the Catholic College Brugge-Oostende in Brugge, Belgium and has completed post-graduate work in musculoskeletal physical therapy at Ghent University in Ghent, Belgium.

Les Jebson, Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Administrator, has received the 2007 "Early Careerist" Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dr. MaryBeth Horodyski

Dr. MaryBeth Horodyski, Associate Professor and Director of Research, has been awarded a grant of $21,430.00 from the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS). Dr. Horodyski’s study will be a comparison of strapping techniques for spinal immobilization. The grant is part of the sports science research initiative of the NCAA.

The foundation was created as a philanthropic entity designed to provide funding support for the research and cure of Osteosarcoma and the UF Shands Cancer Center. The foundation is named after Jennifer Sorrells, who tragically lost her battle a year ago to cancer. USA BasketballThe U.S. Olympic Committee named Dr. Doug McDonald to be the physician for Team USA for the U19 Women’s Basketball World Championships.  The championships take place in Bratislava, Slovakia after an exhibition tournament in the Canary Islands.

Sixteen countries will compete in the U19 World Championship for Women that will be held July 26 - August 5 in Bratislava, Slovakia. FIBA announced on March 6 the draw for the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship For Women, and the USA has been placed in Group B, along with China, Ivory Coast and Lithuania.
