Implant Testing Laboratory

In the implant testing lab, our mission is to equip orthopaedics surgeons with the data they need to make decisions about which implants are best for their patients. Our lab has two primary focus areas: novel implant testing and post-market implant testing.

The novel implant testing program is designed to evaluate new and innovative surgical techniques and implants conceived by UF physicians. The first step in the process of developing a new implant or surgical procedure is to thoroughly examine it in the lab, under realistic conditions, to determine its safety profile before using in the clinical setting.

The post-market implant testing program was established to provide independent unbiased data regarding the mechanical performance of marketed implants. An independent evaluation of important parameters such as strength, stiffness and fatigue limit will allow surgeons to select the device that is best suited for an individual patient.

Facilities

The Implant Testing Lab occupies two rooms in the Medical Science Building at the UF Health Science Center. One room is dedicated to specimen preparation and fixture assembly and the other room houses our mechanical testing resources. Available equipment includes:

  • MTS 858 MiniBionix Material testing machine (axial)

  • MTS 858 MiniBionix Material testing machine (axial/torsion)

  • 30 gpm Hydraulic power supply (sufficient for the two existing load frames with the ability to accommodate at least two more)

  • Exakt diamond blade band saw

  • Exakt grinding system

  • 75 cu.ft. freezer for specimen storage

  • Surgical supplies for specimen preparation or dissections

  • Machine tools for building fixtures
