The UF Hand Fellowship Program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
The Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Florida offers two fellowship positions in upper extremity surgery. There is a strong emphasis on all aspects of upper extremity surgery including the shoulder. These fellowship positions are best suited for applicants with a strong orthopaedic background.
History
There are three full time academic upper extremity physicians at the University:
Larry K. Chidgey, MD
Paul C. Dell, MD
Thomas W. Wright, MD
Dr. Chidgey and Dr. Dell have similar practices which include a wide variety of adult acquired and post traumatic hand and upper extremity issues. Dr. Dell does most of the congenital hand surgery. Dr. Chidgey does most of the elective microsurgical procedures. Dr. Wright has a predominantly shoulder experience with particular interest in shoulder arthroplasty and neuromuscular disorders of the upper extremity. All three individuals address elbow trauma as well as elbow arthroplasty. There is excellent exposure to general principles of rheumatoid reconstruction, arthroscopy of wrist, elbow, and shoulder, as well as both primary and tertiary referral for reconstruction procedures. The exposure in the year for each fellow is roughly 9 months of hand surgery and 3 months of shoulder surgery.
Hand Call
Hand Call is divided between Orthopaedics and Plastic Surgery. The Hand Fellow is on approximately 7 to 8 days per month that includes one weekend, (three weekend days plus four weekdays per month). A junior resident is always available for first call. The Medical Center is a Level One Trauma Center. There is a wide spectrum of fractures which include not only hand and wrist, forearm, elbow, but also the humerus.
Benefits
The annual stipend is dependent upon post graduate years. There is no moonlighting allowed since this is an accredited Hand Fellowship. Each Fellow may attend two meetings; one, the National Hand Society Meeting and secondly, a regional University of Florida Hand Fellow Alumni Meeting. There is a $2000.00 travel stipend per Fellow. There is a two week vacation. Health insurance is provided for each individual as well as their family.
